What to Do After Water Damage

The first minutes after discovering water damage are about safety and preventing additional exposure—not cosmetic repairs.

1. Check for Immediate Hazards

Avoid wet areas involving electricity, unstable ceilings or other obvious hazards.

2. Stop the Source When Safe

Shut off a leaking fixture or water supply when you can do so safely. Some sources require a plumber, roofer or other appropriate professional.

3. Document the Damage

Photos and notes can help preserve a record of visible conditions, particularly if insurance may be involved.

4. Remove Water Appropriately

Significant standing water may require professional extraction. Avoid unnecessary contact with potentially contaminated water.

5. Dry and Restore

After water removal, assess retained moisture and damaged materials. Continue with the restoration process.
